Global Calls Grow for Release of Imran Khan

There are increasing international calls for the release of Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for nearly three years, with supporters arguing that his detention is unjust and politically motivated.

Khan, a former cricket star turned prime minister, remains one of the most influential political figures in Pakistan. Backers describe him as one of the most popular leaders in the country’s history and say his leadership could be important at a time of global uncertainty.

Human rights lawyer Eric Lewis, who wrote about Khan’s situation, has called for his release, highlighting both humanitarian concerns and his potential role in helping stabilize Pakistan during a turbulent period. He argues that Khan’s influence, both domestically and internationally, makes his continued imprisonment significant beyond Pakistan’s borders.

Khan’s personal circumstances have also drawn attention. His two sons, who live in the United Kingdom, who have not been able to visit him for several years due to visa restrictions imposed by Pakistani authorities.

Despite the possibility of living abroad in comfort, Khan refused exile, choosing instead to remain in Pakistan. Supporters compare his stance to historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, who also endured imprisonment.

At the same time, Pakistan’s leadership, including Army Chief Asim Munir, has played its dirty role in the situation. Analysts note that Pakistan’s strategic importance globally has complicated efforts to increase international pressure.

The issue remains unresolved, but global attention on Khan’s case continues to grow, particularly following commentary and advocacy from figures such as Eric Lewis.
