Greg Chappell Leads Former Captains’ Call for Fair Treatment of Imran Khan

Former Australian captain Greg Chappell has penned a powerful article urging humane treatment and immediate medical care for former Pakistan Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.

In the piece, Chappell describes Khan as a long-time rival and friend whose leadership and resilience inspired a nation. He recalls their decades-old association, including their playing days and later meetings when Khan entered politics. Calling him one of cricket’s greatest figures, Chappell says he felt morally compelled to act after learning about reports of Khan’s deteriorating health and prison conditions.

Chappell revealed that he reached out to around 20 former international captains to form a collective appeal. Thirteen joined him, including prominent names such as Allan Border, Michael Atherton, Sir Clive Lloyd, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. The group has called on the Government of Pakistan to ensure Khan receives immediate specialist medical treatment of his choosing, humane detention conditions, family visits, and transparent legal processes.

Emphasising that their appeal is not political but humanitarian, Chappell stated that cricket’s values of fairness, dignity and respect demand that former players stand by one of their own. He described solitary confinement and reported vision loss as deeply troubling, arguing that such treatment is unworthy of a former national leader and global sporting icon.

Chappell concluded that the cricketing fraternity would continue to raise its voice, saying the principles of fair play must extend beyond the boundary rope.
