A group of former cricket captains from Australia, India, England, the West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka have publicly raised concerns over the detention and treatment of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. The letter, signed by cricketing greats including Greg Chappell, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Clive Lloyd, David Gower, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, and Arjuna Ranatunga, highlights Khan’s prison conditions and calls for appropriate medical care.
Recent reports indicate that Khan was transferred under heavy security to a government hospital in Islamabad for eye treatment. His party described the move as “clandestine” and raised concerns over delayed care, limited access to doctors of his choice, and alleged significant vision loss in one eye while in custody. Hospital officials, however, described him as “clinically stable” following the procedure.
Human rights organizations have also weighed in. On September 11, 2024, Amnesty International called for Khan’s “immediate release from arbitrary detention,” citing concerns over fair trial rights, prison-based hearings, restricted access to legal preparation, and judicial independence. Several of Khan’s convictions have been suspended or overturned on appeal, yet he remains incarcerated under additional or revived charges.
Experts note that Khan’s detention reflects broader challenges in Pakistan’s political and judicial system, where high-profile prosecutions of political leaders often carry systemic implications. Critics argue that overlapping legal cases, repeated remand orders, and procedural entanglement give the appearance of detention as a continuing condition irrespective of appellate decisions, raising questions about institutional independence.
The case has also drawn attention to international responses. While the U.S. has historically exercised caution in commenting publicly on Pakistan’s internal affairs, the cricketing world’s intervention underscores growing global concern over due process, humane treatment, and democratic credibility in politically sensitive cases.
Khan’s detention and legal proceedings continue to polarize Pakistani politics, with human rights advocates and international observers urging transparency, fair trial standards, and immediate attention to his health.
