UK-Based Retina Specialist Offers Medical Assistance for Imran Khan’s Reported Eye Condition

A UK-based consultant ophthalmologist has offered his professional assistance following reports concerning the eye health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Dr. Rizwan Cheema, a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon based in Cardiff, United Kingdom, has written to Abdul Ahad expressing concern over what he described as worrying reports about Imran Khan’s eye condition in Islamabad. According to Dr. Cheema, the reported diagnosis of Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) is a serious and potentially sight-threatening condition that requires urgent and structured medical management.

Dr. Cheema stated that CRVO, if not treated promptly, can result in significant retinal ischemia, macular edema, and neovascularization affecting both the posterior and anterior segments of the eye. These complications may lead to vitreous hemorrhage, neovascular glaucoma, and permanent vision loss.

He emphasized that standard treatment typically involves regular intravitreal injections, often administered monthly in the initial phase, to address the biochemical mediators responsible for swelling and ischemia. Long-term monitoring is essential, sometimes extending over months or years. In cases where neovascularization develops, laser photocoagulation may be required, while neovascular glaucoma could necessitate surgical intervention.

Highlighting his credentials, Dr. Cheema noted that he is a retina specialist trained in both the United States and the United Kingdom and has over 25 years of experience managing similar cases in clinical practice.

In his communication, he offered to provide direct input into the former prime minister’s care or a second opinion if needed, stating that he would be willing to assist in any capacity to ensure appropriate specialist management.
