In a personal plea addressed to Elon Musk, Jemima Khan, former wife of Imran Khan, has raised concerns over the suppression of her social media posts related to her ex-husband’s detention. Imran Khan’s two sons have been denied access to their father, who has been unlawfully held in solitary confinement for 22 months, according to the United Nations.
Jemima Khan highlighted that X (formerly Twitter) remains her only platform to shed light on what she describes as Imran Khan’s status as a political prisoner deprived of basic human rights. However, she claims that every time she posts about his imprisonment and the plight of her children, her reach is deliberately throttled, both within Pakistan and globally.
Addressing Elon Musk directly, Jemima emphasized that Musk had previously pledged to uphold free speech on the platform, criticizing the current restrictions. She referenced findings from Grok, an AI tool analyzing her account, which revealed “secret throttling” a form of algorithmic suppression where her posts are hidden from most viewers despite her account not being suspended.
According to Grok’s analysis, her engagement metrics in 2023 and early 2024 averaged hundreds of millions of impressions per month, but in 2025, impressions plummeted by 97%, with a sharp decline beginning after a post in May 2025, coinciding with the end of Pakistan’s X ban. The platform’s suppression of her posts, she asserts, directly impedes her ability to raise awareness about her husband’s unlawful detention and her sons’ separation.
Jemima Khan called on Elon Musk to honor his commitments to free speech by removing the “secret throttling” on her account, @Jemima_Khan, and allow her message to reach the world. Her appeal underscores ongoing concerns about censorship and online suppression of political dissent in Pakistan.
